Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out for the summer, but Jonny Bairstow has returned to the England Test squad as wicketkeeper in place of Ben Foakes.

Fast bowler Archer suffered another stress fracture to his right elbow.

James Anderson was named in the 15-man squad despite a groin injury while playing for Lancashire.

The four-day test against the Irish at Lords Stadium is England’s final preparations for the Ashes series against Australia, which begins on June 16.

Anderson joined the fast bowling division with Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson and Matthew Potts, while Mark Wood provided a high-tempo option after missing New Zealand’s 1-1 draw.

Also recalled is Chris Vokes, who last tested last March and has not played since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brandon McCallum took over.

Batsman Ollie Pope has been officially confirmed as Stokes’ vice-captain after leading England in their winter warm-up. Given Stokes’ recent issues with chronic knee discomfort, his elevation is significant.

Foakes, 30, of Surrey, can consider himself unlucky. Stokes, who often refers to him as “the best goalkeeper in the world”, has won 10 of his last 12 games and is a regular for England.

However, after Bairstow slipped on the golf course, his replacement Harry Brook had a brilliant start to his Test career with four hundred in six matches.

That leaves England in the dilemma of how to accommodate a returning Birstow, who himself broke six centuries before injury in 2022.

Any suggestion of reshuffling the batting order was always unlikely — some even advocated for Stokes as an opener — with a straight choice between Bairstow and Fox.

Bairstow, 33, has kept 49 of his 89 Tests and will fall behind the stumps for the first time since September 2021.

“It was a very difficult decision to take Ben Fox out of the team. He’s been fantastic for England over the past year, but Jonny Bairstow is one of the best players in the world and what he showed last summer We achieved our goals,” said England director of cricket Rob Key.

The new elbow injury is the latest setback for the 28-year-old, who has not played in a Test since February 2021.

Archer returned to England for white-ball cricket earlier this year after a string of back and elbow problems.

However, he made an early return against Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians after further discomfort in his elbow and scans revealed a stress fracture.

He will spend time recovering with the medical team from England and his Sussex side, but there must now be big doubts over whether Archer will add to his 13 Test caps.

“It’s been a frustrating and frustrating time for Jofra Archer,” Key said.

“He was making good progress until the elbow injury recurred, which kept him out for a long time.

“We wish him the best of luck in his recovery. I’m sure we’ll see Jofra get back to his best and win games for England, whatever the format. Hopefully sooner rather than later.”
