Since Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship at age 50, each of the last seven major winners has been under the age of 30.

Pre-tournament press conferences

Q. What have you noticed about some of the golf course setup changes for this week, especially some of those chipping areas like the 15th?

RORY McILROY: Yeah, definitely more second rounds. I feel when we get to the golf courses, it’s either one or the other. You get a track with tons of runoffs and no other tests around the terrain, or you get a track where there’s a ton of long rough terrain and no real runoffs, where I feel like this has a good balance between the two.

Q: This week you will face a pretty thorough test. What is the biggest thing this golf course asks of players?

RORY McILROY: Discipline, I think. You’ve got to keep it out of those fairway bunkers. They are very, very punitive. What Andrew Green did with the green complexes and kind of spread them out and you see all these extra pieces, the back right and the back left, I think it’s going to be real – if somebody can maintain their discipline and not start shooting those pins and I know that the middle of the green is pretty good for most holes, I think it’s — it’s a long golf course, and the par and the length is going to be an advantage.

But I think there’s an even bigger advantage in making sure you’re hitting these greens from the fairways. It’s a combination of everything, but I think discipline will be a big factor this week.
