The National Federation of State High School Associations has changed its free throw and foul rules for the upcoming basketball season, the organization announced. in release.
Teams will now shoot two free throws in a “bonus” game, whereas previously they would have shot one at a time.
The rule on when the bonus will be paid has also been changed. In the past, teams were awarded one point when their opponent committed seven fouls in a half. Now, the bonus will be reached for five mistakes in a quarter, and the mistakes will reset at the end of each quarter.
“The rules committee has learned a lot that shows the number of injuries in rebounding events and saw this as an opportunity to reduce the chance of rough play during the return,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports and Liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. “In addition, correcting the mistakes every quarter improves the flow of the game and allows teams to change their game without taking risks in the second and fourth quarters.”
Several other minor rules were also revised or changed, including the establishment of a shot clock at the scorer’s table and the undershirt and undershirt rules.
