Today’s release of iOS 16.5 is the latest full software update before Apple moves to iOS 17, which will be unveiled at WWDC on Monday, June 5.

Update May 20. More details about iOS 16.5 have emerged and Apple has now released the first beta for iOS 16.6. Already! Apple doesn’t mess around.

Security issues in iOS 16.5 are numerous, e.g Apple revealed in a support document. There are more than three dozen of them in total, which seems to emphasize the urgency of this update. As fellow Forbes contributor Davey Winder notes herethis includes three zero-day exploits, which Davey explains in detail, although two were fixed in iOS 16.4.1 (a) Rapid Security Response earlier this month.

One major issue that has come to light so far is that the USB 3 camera adapter that plugs into the iPhone’s Lightning port is not working for several users, as reported MacRumors. This isn’t a widely used plugin, so it’s unlikely to be a widespread problem, but I’ll let Gordon tell you if it’s an important development.

Meanwhile, yes, iOS 16.6 is already available to developers. Early reports suggest the update may include iMessage contact key verification, designed to give “users even stronger ways to protect their data,” as Apple says. It’s not for everyone. Apple says that “users who face extraordinary digital threats — like journalists, human rights activists, and government officials — can choose to further verify that they’re only messaging the people they intend to.”

This is one of the last features promised for iOS 16, and iOS 16.6 looks like it might be the last update before iOS 17 rolls out — unless there are bugs or quick security fixes, of course.

In the initial release, this feature doesn’t seem to work, so it could be that Apple is just laying the groundwork at this stage.

Which iPhones can run iOS 16.5?

If you have an iPhone that was released in late 2017 or later, you’re golden. Apple iOS 16.5 works on all iPhone devices from iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X onwards, and this update includes features relevant to all those devices.

How to get to it

Updating is easy: open the Settings app on your device, select General, then Software Update. Then click Download and Install and everything will be sorted for you.

What’s in the release
