Tom Lawes surprisingly dismissed England duo Zak Crawley and Sam Billings early on day three as he claimed 5-22 to take Surrey’s 10-wicket haul over three days against champions Kent.
England opener Crawley fell for 34, adding just three runs to his overnight tally, then captain Kent Billings picked up a devastating two as Kent slumped to 141.
Remainers Surrey need just 58 to complete their fourth win in six County Championship Division one games this season.
They got there in just 11.3 overs, just before lunch, when skipper Rory Burns hit bowler Jack Leaning for six over three.
He finished with a run-a-ball 36 not out, with Dom Sibley unbeaten on 16, for a 22-wicket haul that cemented Surrey’s place at the top of the table.
They now have 104 points, 25 ahead of second-placed Warwickshire, who do not play this weekend as they host. the start of the new T20 season at Edgbastonwhile Hampshire will join the Bears on 79 points if they pull off a much-anticipated win over Northamptonshire.

For Kent it is the third defeat of the summer which for them seems to lead to a fight against relegation from the Championship.
It took Surrey just 16 overs on the third morning to take the last six wickets of the Kent seconds for 61 runs and give themselves their narrow victory.
All-rounder Lawes, still only 20, underlined his immense potential by adding the scalps of Billings, Crawley and Joey Evison to Tawanda Muyeye and Leaning late on the second day after Kent resumed at 80-4.
His morning tally was 6.2-1-20-3, in addition to 2.4-1-2-2 the previous evening, when he took his first five wickets in first-class cricket.
Lawes, who broke into Surrey’s senior team midway through last season, now has 36 red-ball wickets in 10 matches at an average of 20.22.
