Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa: Roberto Firmino and -News

Jacob Ramsey’s sweet goal was his sixth league goal of the season

Roberto Firmino’s 89th-minute equalizer saved the draw with Aston Villa and sent Liverpool’s hopes of progressing into the Premier League’s top four.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are three points behind Newcastle United and Manchester United with one game remaining, meaning their two rivals need only take one point from their final two games Champions League qualification for next season can be guaranteed.

Indeed, it was still mathematically possible, if unlikely, thanks to a departing Firmino sneaking a low cross from Mohamed Salah at the near post.

The visitors will be disappointed not to have taken all three points after an impressive performance.

They had a golden chance to take the lead midway through the first half when Ibrahima Konate tripped Ollie Watkins inside the box, but the striker deflected his penalty wide.

Unai Emery’s men pushed on and scored a well-deserved goal in the first half through Jacob Ramsey’s beautifully guided volley at the back post from a Douglas Lewis cross.

Liverpool improved after that and thought they had leveled when Cody Gakpo converted after a scramble, but the effort was ruled out in the build-up.

Villa kept their European aspirations alive by moving up to seventh after the draw, but missed out on sixth with a late equalizer.
