Manchester City celebrated their third consecutive Premier League win with a win over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
City were confirmed as unbeaten winners despite Nottingham Forest beating Arsenal on Saturday, allowing manager Pep Guardiola to make nine changes from the side that beat Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final.
Erling Haaland was rested but Julian Alvarez provided a way to reduce the absence with a clinical finish to give City the lead after 12 minutes, as their jubilant fans basked in the sun in anticipation of the displays and celebrations.
Chelsea had another good chance as the game wore on, with City deputy goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saving Raheem Sterling’s clearance and Conor Gallagher tackling the post.
Kalvin Phillips hit the woodwork for City as he sealed another victory in the run that has brought them the title and treble, the FA Cup final at Wembley and the Champions League in Istanbul.
Man City will show strength
The players played with pressure to secure the title and manager Guardiola was able to give members of his squad the moment many fans wait for the final whistle to praise their heroes.
Guardiola’s appointment gave an impression of the vast amount of talent he possesses just by looking at City’s substitute bench.
Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, John Stones, Jack Grealish, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and goal scorer Ederson could be present.
Has there ever been a more talented bench?
They can all be restored when these two grand finals come, but it was a demonstration, if need be, of what other teams have to deal with if they want to unleash what City have in this country and what gives them a chance to win. Their first Champions League.
Goal-scoring Alvarez may have labored in Haaland’s shadow for a long time but he has achieved what he has and the season he has had, with the chance to add to his World Cup treble with Argentina.
The Premier League is Manchester City again – now it’s going to Wembley and Istanbul.
Lots to follow.
