Glenn Middleton says there is “no cover” as Dundee United look to escape relegation in their last two Scottish Premiership games.
United trail Ross County by two points and Wednesday’s visitors Kilmarnock by three points.
The Tangerines finish the regular season away to Motherwell on Sunday.
“This is something we have to be sure is still in our hands. We have to make the most of it,” said winner Middleton, 23.
“There’s definitely no place to hide from here. I don’t think we’ve been hiding away from other events. I feel like we’ve always come back and try to make the most of what we’re going into every game.”
Manager Jim Goodwin added: “Wednesday night is the biggest game of the season, there’s no doubt about it. We have to play this game like it’s the cup final.
“All we’re asking of the players is to go out on Wednesday night, run through brick walls at each other, give everything to the cause and be able to look at each other and know they’re going to do their best. Go win the game.”
Middleton believes the club’s pressure “eventually” will have a psychological impact and said of Killie’s trip: “Big – there’s no other way to describe it, especially the way the last few weeks have been.
“Everything is going to be a big night for all these clubs now. From minute one of the game, it will be about who is calm, calm on the ball, who believes in themselves, who believes in each other in the team.
“We know we’re capable of doing it. The guys in our dressing room, what’s in the dressing room, I’m confident that we have calm heads at the most important moments of the game. to do what’s needed.”
Goodwin, who will make a late decision on the fitness of striker Steven Fletcher, revealed that the squad met on Monday and said: “The key message was not to feel sorry for ourselves.”
United, who have lost their last three games, spent four years in the Championship before returning in 2020.
And Middleton said about the possible relegation: “It would be difficult. Regardless of what happens, this club should not be in the position it is in even a minute, being here with two games to go.
“It’s okay to say that. I know everyone who’s sat in this chair has said that. The next two games are really up to us to do the work we need to do.
“The way it turned out, it wasn’t good.”
