The PGA Championship is proving to be a test of survival at Oak Hill. And for many top-ranked golfers and top competitors, the test is too tough. Some of the biggest names and top players in the world rankings will not be around for the weekend after poor opening rounds in Rochester, NY. However, world number two Scottie Scheffler, the pre-tournament favorite, will shoot a free round of 3-under par 67.

The club leader is Bryson DeChambeau (-4) of LIV Golf. However, the leader is Eric Cole (-5), a 350/1 pre-tournament longshot who has four holes to play and will finish his first round early on Friday morning. The PGA Championship started nearly two hours late due to frost delays, and more than 25 players will complete Round 1 on Friday. That includes world number 4 Patrick Cantlay (+4).

Leaderboard and custom odds

Only 19 players are under par on the 7,394-yard par 70 East Course at Oak Hill. Four of those golfers are -1 and still have 3-4 holes to go from the first round. According to Justin Ray Golf, each of the last 18 majors in men’s golf opened the week with a round under par.

The narrow and fast fairways resulted in a driving accuracy rate of just 41.8 percent (this season’s lap average is around 59 percent). Chipping out of the rough won’t be a great option this week – the average drive from the rough from 150 to 175 yards finished 58 feet from the hole – nearly 15 feet further than the tour average.

Scottie Scheffler (-3) had a bogey free round. Jon Rahm (+6) missed three putts from 3-5 feet. Rory McIlroy (+1) hit just two fairways off the tee.

Q. Is there a survival mentality in tournaments like this now that you’re in the position you’re in? Like feeling it’s going to be a grind over the next 54 holes?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, I think no matter what position I’m in tomorrow, I’d throw it out. This is one of those places where you have to do it. Just try to stay in position, make the important couple of passes and just keep the momentum going. I felt like there wasn’t that much wind today and tomorrow looks like the wind will be 10 to 20 MPH.

Q. The TV microphones picked up the little conversation you had with Justin Thomas coming off the 10th tee box this morning. You said something about sleeping a little better and having a little more energy. Perhaps implying that you weren’t feeling 100 percent. Are you OK?

RORY McILROY: I’m fighting something. I thought I had a great night’s sleep last night, I looked at my Whip, and I was 22 percent recovered, and my skin temperature was 3.5 degrees higher than it had been. I’m struggling with something, but I haven’t hit the ball very well at all. I thought I did a good job recording it.

Q. How would you summarize your day today?

VIKTOR HOVLAND: I’m very happy with today, especially after that 2-over start through three. To get to 3-under, make five birdies, that was really, really cool because it’s one of the hardest tests I’ve played in a while.

Q. Did the track play the way you thought it would through the practice rounds?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: It was tough. The wind seemed to be blowing in every direction but in the direction it was supposed to be blowing, which made trying to figure it out even more difficult as it was not a light breeze. It was enough to influence the ball a lot. The golf course played really hard, but I felt like they laid it out really nicely. It was fair. You just had to hit good golf shots.
