The security forces intervened quickly to ensure the safety of the players and officials of the team. Some guards faced the fans, but were pushed back into the aisle. Riot police stood in front of the tunnel entrance with shields to prevent fans from rushing the players.
The followers threw chairs and other objects before dispersing without further incident.
Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez tried to get his players into the dressing room even before the fans did.
“It was a moment of happiness, joy, it was unusual, but we were not at home and at one point I thought it was more respectful if we went back to the locker room,” he said.
Espanyol have apologized for what happened in the Barcelona derby at the RCDE Stadium.
“We must always oppose violence, in all areas of life,” said Espanyol coach Luis García. “Everything was done to prevent this from happening but it was not possible.”
Barcelona won their first league title since 2019 with four wins remaining. The loss leaves Espanyol again in the final.
