La Liga calls for “more powers” to punish discrimination in Spanish football.
Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has been the subject of racist abuse several times this season.
The Spanish league’s handling of the latest incident in Valencia on Sunday has been widely criticized.
Under Spanish law, La Liga is currently only able to detect and report offenses but not impose sanctions, making it “incompetent”.
It said it felt “deeply disappointed” by the lack of sanctions and criticism by the authorities it reports to.
La Liga will officially request the amendment of two Spanish laws to give it the power to impose sanctions such as the full or partial closure of stadiums, the ban of supporters and financial penalties.
Currently, it sends a weekly letter to the RFEF’s – the Spanish football competition committee – the committee against violence, racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport describing any music that encourages violence or insults.
In the case of insults that can be considered a hate crime, La Liga also reports to the Anti-Hate Office.
La Liga has said that it “has always felt that it has no power” these reports were “dissolved without even reaching the courts”.
In a lengthy statement, it also explained some of the “surprising reasons” the previous reports had been dismissed and a summary of the cases reported and how they were judged.
Of these, nine are related to the activities of Brazilian Vinicius Jr.

After the game, Vinicius and the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, joined them on Twitter, where the Brazilian said that La Liga “is racist” and “in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racism”.
Tebas responded by saying that Vinicius twice did not come to the meeting to discuss what he “can do about racism”, adding: “Before criticizing and insulting La Liga, you should inform yourself.”
Spanish police said on Tuesday three people had been arrested for “racist behavior” at Sunday’s game.
Police previously said they had arrested four people suspected of hanging a statue of Vinicius from a bridge in Madrid earlier this year.
On Monday the lights at the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro were turned off for an hour in solidarity with Vinicius.
